Feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list? You're not alone! Let’s explore practical ways that we as Christians, can have better time management. Make sure to watch the YouTube video on this subject as well.
In our fast-paced world, the clock seems to tick ever faster, leaving us feeling perpetually behind. We juggle work, family, church commitments, and personal aspirations, often wondering where the day went. As Christians, we are called to be good stewards of all that God has entrusted to us, and that includes the precious and irreplaceable gift of time.
The Apostle Paul urged the Ephesians, "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:15-16,2 ESV). This isn't just a suggestion; it's a divine imperative. Why? Because time is a finite resource, a gift from God to be used for His glory and the advancement of His Kingdom.
Seeing Time Through a Biblical Lens:
Before diving into practical strategies, it's crucial to shift our perspective on time itself. Scripture reveals several key truths:
Time is a Gift from God: Every moment we have is granted by our Creator. Psalm 31:15 reminds us, "My times are in your hand." Recognizing this fosters gratitude and a sense of responsibility for how we use this gift.
Time is Fleeting: Like a vapor or a passing shadow, our time on earth is temporary (James 4:14). This understanding should instill a sense of urgency to live intentionally and purposefully.
Time is Valuable: We cannot earn more time, nor can we retrieve what is lost. Therefore, every moment is precious and should be treated with care.
Time is Meant for God's Purposes: We are created for good works, which God has prepared beforehand for us to walk in them (Ephesians 2:10). Our time should be aligned with His will and used to serve Him and others.
Practical Principles for Christian Time Management:
So, how do we, as believers, become better stewards of our time? Here are some practical principles rooted in Christian values:
Seek God's Guidance: Begin each day in prayer, asking for wisdom and direction in how to use your time. Seek His priorities for your day and align your schedule accordingly. "Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established" (Proverbs 16:3).9
Prioritize Kingdom Priorities: Jesus emphasized seeking first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).10 This means making time for prayer, Bible study, worship, and serving within the church and community. These spiritual disciplines should be the foundation upon which we build our schedules.
Identify Your God-Given Roles and Responsibilities: God has placed us in various roles – as parents, spouses, employees, friends, and members of the body of Christ.11 Understand the responsibilities that come with each role and allocate time accordingly.
Plan and Schedule Intentionally: Just as Nehemiah meticulously planned the rebuilding of Jerusalem, we should also plan our days and weeks. Use a planner, calendar, or digital tools to schedule appointments, tasks, and deadlines.12 Be realistic about what you can accomplish in a given timeframe.
Learn to Say "No": As Christians, we often feel obligated to say "yes" to every request. However, overcommitting ourselves can lead to burnout and hinder our ability to effectively fulfill our primary responsibilities. Discerning when to say "no" is crucial for protecting our time and energy.
Eliminate Time Wasters: Identify activities that drain your time without contributing to God's purposes or your well-being. This might include excessive social media use, unproductive entertainment, or unnecessary commitments. Be intentional about minimizing these distractions.
Practice Sabbath Rest: God himself rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2).We are called to follow His example and intentionally set aside time for rest, reflection, and spiritual renewal. This isn't just about being unproductive; it's about re-centering ourselves on God and allowing Him to replenish us.
Be Flexible and Graceful: While planning is important, life often throws unexpected curveballs. Be prepared to adjust your schedule and extend grace to yourself and others when things don't go according to plan. Remember that people are more important than tasks.
Focus on Eternal Impact: Ultimately, our time on earth is short. Let us strive to use it in ways that have eternal significance – sharing the Gospel, serving others, and growing in our relationship with Christ. "So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom" (Psalm 90:12).
Redeeming the Time, Glorifying God:
Christian time management isn't about becoming hyper-efficient robots. It's about intentionally stewarding the gift of time God has given us, aligning our priorities with His Kingdom, and living lives that bring Him glory. By seeking His guidance, prioritizing eternal values, and implementing practical strategies, we can redeem the time and live more purposeful and fulfilling lives in His service. May we all strive to be faithful stewards of this precious and fleeting gift, using it to love God and love our neighbor well.
