If you have ever wanted to achieve a specific goal or form a new habit; you must have discipline.

What does it mean to be disciplined?

·      The ability to resist impulses and temptations

·      Have clear goals and work steadily towards them

·      Maintain a routine or pattern of behavior

·      Overcome obstacles and setbacks without giving up

You truly can be disciplined in every area of your life. Here are just a few areas that you can become disciplined in:

1.    Exercising

2.    Eating healthier

3.    Limit social media and/or TV watching

4.    Your thinking***

5.    Finishing a work and/or home projects

6.    Alcohol, smoking

7.    Time management

8.    Finances

9.    Spiritual-Reading the Bible, prayer, etc.

Discipline takes hard work, commitment, and determination. You must also learn to persevere when you feel like giving up, or you are not seeing any tangible results from your disciplined lifestyle.

Research shows that people who have a good sense of discipline are less likely to suffer from major mental health issues and more likely to experience overall increased wellness.

If discipline is hard work, then how does one build unbreakable discipline?

Here are some keys to building unbreakable discipline:

1.    Develop a structured routine (morning and night routines as well).

2.    Remove temptations

3.    Prioritize your tasks

4.    Gradually build your willpower through consistent small actions/goals

5.    Write out your goals, and be specific with what you want to accomplish

6.    Get a planner, and write out your daily, weekly, and monthly tasks

7.    Reward yourself as needed to maintain motivation

➡️ Life Coach Tip:

One of the most important keys to building unbreakable discipline is to not give up when you have a setback and are not able to achieve the discipline that you want. Have an awareness that you will not do everything perfectly, you will have days that seem you are not making any progress, days that seem you are not gaining traction and days that you will not feel well and want to quit. Allow yourself the grace to not do things perfectly. Just make sure that you “dust” yourself off and try again the next day. Don’t “throw in the towel” when you have times that are not successful. Failure can only happen if you give up.

Here is an example that happened to me this week not achieving my usual daily disciplines but allowing myself the grace to have an “off” day. Yesterday where I live, we got a record number snowstorm. We were snowed in and could not leave the house. I was not able to go for my morning run, so I decided that I would do a make-up run when the weather cleared. I normally only watch about an hour of TV a day, but because it was cold, dark, and still snowing after dinner I allowed myself to curl up by the fire, watch a movie, and have popcorn. I normally have a piece of fruit and dark chocolate after dinner, but on this rare snow day, I allowed myself to watch a movie and have popcorn. The next day, I got back on track and went for my run and had my fruit and dark chocolate after dinner.

Reflect:

What do you think would have happened if I gave up yesterday on my daily disciplines because I had an “off “day? Many people quit when they have a setback. You may have multiple setbacks. It is wise to allow yourself at least one “grace” day a week. In other words, I usually only watch TV (1) hour a night, but if I am having a particularly challenging week or we get another snow day, I allow myself one movie pass per weeknight. Here is another example, I eat healthy all week, but on the weekends, I allow myself to eat meals that I enjoy. If giving yourself too much leeway is posing a problem, then adjust to make it work for you. I can now eat what I want on the weekends because I disciplined myself to eat healthy during the week for a long time.

Meditate on these scriptures. What is the Lord revealing to you through these scriptures:

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I should be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:27

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. Proverbs 25:28

Training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age. Titus 2:12
