From the Desk of Your Empowerment Life Coach-Have Less Stress by Cultivating These 7 Practices

Writer: stephaniereckstephaniereck

Do you want to have less stress in your life? I have learned through the years of going through my own stressful situations that you can cultivate (make room) in your life to decrease your stress.

Incorporating these 7 daily practices into your everyday living can greatly reduce your overall levels of stress.

1.    Slow down. Hurry and rushing create stress and anxiety, but slowing down can decrease your stress. Have a slow morning, get up a little earlier so that you are not racing around trying to get ready for work or drop the kiddos off at school. Slow down when you are driving. There is no need to be in a hurry and speed like you are in an Indy car 500 race. Slow down when you are walking, talking with others when you are eating meals, and with any activity you are involved in. Enjoy and savor the moments, not rushing to get through them. “Stop and smell the roses.”

2.    Have balance in every area of your life. If you are working all the time, and not taking time off to rest and enjoy life you could easily burn out or develop health problems. The same goes if all you do is watch TV, this leads to laziness and procrastination. Make sure that you have balance in your work, personal enjoyment/hobbies, your marriage, your children, serving/volunteering, friendships, Sabbath days, and other disciplines like exercising, spending time with the Lord, cleaning, and decluttering/organizing.

3.    Say “yes” to the great things and “no” to the good things. If you say,” yes” to everything that comes your way, you will have a decrease in your strength and energy for the great things that may come your way. Just because something is good, does not mean it is good for you!

4.    Create margin in your day. Don’t overschedule your day by having non-stop activities. Space your day where you have small breaks throughout your day. Don’t use these breaks to scroll on social media or fill these times with stressful things, instead opt for a cup of green tea, go outside to get fresh air, take a walk, sit still, pray, or declare God’s promises over your life.

5.    Take a Sabbath day once a week, and take time off as needed, especially during stressful times. Taking a weekly Sabbath means rest. Permit yourself to rest your body, your mind, and your spirit. Do things that will replenish your mind, body, and spirit.

6.    Detach from your phone and social media for periods of time. The incessant checking of our phones and social media keeps our minds distracted and busy, and not in a place of rest and peace. Permit yourself to put your phone away, and to stop checking social media for certain times of the day. It’s okay to do so, and in fact, it will be good for your mental and spiritual health. You will be able to hear the Holy Spirit more and clearer when you are not distracted by your electronic devices.

7.    Start your day off right. How you start your morning can certainly affect the rest of the day. Remember, slow down and that includes the morning time. Get up earlier and connect with God. Eat a healthy breakfast, exercise, make your bed, and clean your kitchen from breakfast. Doing these small tasks in the morning means that when your day is over you will end your day in peace and harmony as your home will be clean and tidy from the morning.

If you want less stress in your life, try incorporating these 7 practices into your daily life. Rushing, excessive busyness, and a hurried lifestyle create stress and lead to burnout. Don’t think that you can “burn the candle at both ends” and not have consequences for your mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
