From the Desk of Your Empowerment Life Coach: God's Purpose After 50: It's Not Too Late!

The kids are grown, or perhaps you never had children, the career might be winding down, or you've even started thinking about retiring or have already. Life after 50 can feel like a significant shift, a time for reflection, and maybe even a touch of wondering, "What now?"

I admit I recently turned 51, I started thinking about what was my purpose now. I have a prodigal child, and no other children or grandchildren, and my career has shifted from one of a full-time professional to one that is self-employed working fewer hours. I have to redefine my purpose and legacy.

If you believe in a divine plan, then the truth is resounding and joyful: God's purpose for you is far from over at 50; in many ways, it's just beginning to blossom in new and profound ways.

Our society often glorifies youth and productivity in a narrow sense. We can fall into the trap of believing our most significant contributions are behind us once we cross that half-century mark. This couldn't be further from God's perspective. Scripture is filled with examples of individuals who stepped into significant roles and callings later in life. Think of Moses leading his people out of Egypt at 80, or Abraham becoming the father of nations well into his old age.1 Their stories remind us that God's timing is not our timing, and His power is not limited by our age.2

So, what might God's purpose look like for you in this vibrant new chapter? It's likely not a one-size-fits-all answer, but rather a unique tapestry woven with your experiences, wisdom, and the desires He has placed in your heart. Here are some threads you might find in that tapestry:

1. Embracing the Wisdom of Experience: Decades of life have gifted you with invaluable lessons, insights, and perspectives. God can use this accumulated wisdom in powerful ways. Perhaps you can mentor younger individuals, offering guidance in their careers, relationships, or faith journeys. Your life story itself can be a testament to God's faithfulness and a source of encouragement for others facing similar challenges.

2. Rediscovering Untapped Passions: With fewer demands on your time, this can be a season to explore interests you may have put on hold. Did you always dream of painting, writing, volunteering, or learning a new skill? God often plants desires within us that align with His larger purpose.3 This could be the time to cultivate those passions and see how they might be used to bring joy to yourself and blessings to others.

3. Deepening Your Spiritual Life: The busyness of earlier years can sometimes leave little room for deep spiritual reflection. Post-50 can be a rich time to cultivate a deeper relationship with God through prayer, Bible study, and contemplative practices. As you draw closer to Him, you become more attuned to His voice and His leading in your life.

4. Expanding Your Ministry and Service: Your definition of "ministry" might evolve. It may no longer be tied to a specific role or title within a church. Instead, it might look like acts of kindness within your community, offering practical support to those in need, or using your professional skills in a volunteer capacity. Your seasoned compassion and empathy can be powerful tools in serving others in God's name.

5. Leaving a Lasting Legacy: As you look towards the future, consider the legacy you want to leave behind. This isn't just about material possessions, but about the impact you have on the lives of others and the values you impart. God can use this time to solidify your spiritual legacy, leaving a powerful example of faith and love for generations to come.

It's crucial to remember that God's purpose isn't about striving for some grand achievement in the eyes of the world. It's about faithfully walking with Him, being open to His leading, and using the gifts and opportunities He provides, no matter your age.
